Με επιστολή τους στην υπουργό πολιτισμού Λυδία Κονιόρδου την οποία υπογράφει η Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή, η IPS (International Plato Society), εκφράζει την ανησυχία της πως ένα εμπορικό κέντρο κοντά στον διεθνούς φήμης και εμβέλεια αρχαιολογικό χώρο, θα υπονομεύσει το χώρο και θα αποτρέψει μελλοντικές ανακαλύψεις. Η Διενής Εταιρεία που δραστηριοποιείται διεθνώς, προτρέπει την ηγεσία του υπουργείου πολιτισμού να ασχοληθεί με τον “παρατημένο” αρχαιολογικό χώρο και να του δώσει τη σημασία που του αξίζει!

Dear Ms. Koniordou:
The has learned of plans to build a large shopping mall next to the site of Plato’s Academy, an important archeological site. Although we appreciate that the mall’s developers have pledged to protect the site, we are concerned that extensive development of surrounding areas could undermine the site and prevent future discoveries. We are writing to urge you to consider carefully whether this would be the best use of this area and, if plans do go forward, to do everything possible to insure that this historical treasure be preserved.
As you well know, millions of people around the world have studied Plato’s works and many of us continue to find them inspiring. Many students of Plato make a point to visit Athens to experience what they can of ancient Greek culture. The archeological site of the Academy is not widely known and, consequently, not now a destination for visitors. Although it will never rival the Acropolis, many visitors to Athens would be very interested in visiting the site. We urge you to continue archeological excavation and to publicize the existence of this site more widely. We are concerned that the type of development planned for the site of Plato’s Academy might discourage people from visiting it.
